I am Director at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research where I lead the Department Social Demography, and Professor of Social Data Science at the University of Helsinki. Previously I worked at the London School of Economics as Professor of Demography. Two key areas in my research at the moment are the ERC Synergy project BIOSFER: Untangling the causes of low fertility in modern societies that I lead together with Co-PIs Siri Eldevik Håberg from Norway and Cecilia Ramlau-Hansen from Denmark; and the Max Planck-University of Helsinki Center for Social Inequalities in Population Health that I lead jointly with Co-Director Pekka Martikainen from Finland. My training includes a PhD in Demography from the University of Pennsylvania and a PhD in Statistics from the University of Helsinki, and most of my work focuses on population health, fertility dynamics, and demographic forecasting.
