Abstract

This monograph gives an overview of demographic trends and family policies in the three Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania) during the period 1989-2008. The monograph is organized into five parts. The first part presents a comparative overview of demographic trends in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania in the context of the EU-27 countries. The second part deals with demographic changes and the current situation in each country. The third part discusses the development and effectiveness of family policies during the period 1989-2008. The fourth part, based on case studies in each country, addresses interplays between family changes and family policies. Finally, the fifth part is devoted to the analyses of family, fertility, and household structures using the population census data.
