Diego Alburez-Gutierrez leads the Independent Research Group on Kinship Inequalities at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) in Germany. Diego received his PhD in Demography and Population Studies (2018) and his MSc in Social Research Methods (2014) from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). In 2019, he was honored by the Max Planck Society with the Otto Hahn Medal for outstanding scientific achievement for his PhD thesis "Beyond excess mortality: the demographic life of a Mayan community after a war of massacres". In 2022, Diego received the BSPS Early Career Award from the British Society for Population Studies and, in 2023, he received the European Demographer Award from Population Europe. Diego is best known for his work combining formal demography and empirical data to study intergenerational family processes. His research has been published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Demography, Population and Development Review, and other key disciplinary journals.
