The new issue (Nr. 2/2017) of Demografische Forschung Aus Erster Hand, the popular science newsletter with latest research results from demography, has been released. (The Newsletter is available in German only.)
Topics of the 2/2017 issue:
1. Coming in to stay?
Education, values, and goals of refugees in Austria
As more and more refugees arrived in Europe in 2015 and 2016, debates quicky flared about where these refugees should be placed and how might be integrated. But what was often missing from these discussions was reliable information about the people who were coming: What types of education and qualifications do these refugees have? What attitudes and values do they bring with them? How religious are they?
2. Children born to fathers
A new analysis shows for the first time that the male birth rate in eastern Germany has hit a global record low
Research on birth rates mostly focuses on women, while ignoring the role of men in the birth of children. This is largely because of the scarcity of data on male fertility. Two researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock have used statistical methods to show why the birth rates of men as well as of women should be given more attention.
3.Times of health, times of sickness
Are we spending the additional years of life we have gained in good health or in care dependency?
In almost all districts of Germany, life expectancy rose in the first decade of the 21st century. But how have we been spending these additional years of life: as spry retirees or as care dependents? A study conducted by the Rostock Center for the Study of Demographic Change shows that the answer to this question hinges to a large extent on the place of residence. Overall, however, the number of years spent in both good and declining health have been increasing.
"Demografische Forschung Aus Erster Hand" is a joint publication of the Max Planck Institute for demographic Research (MPIDR), the Rostocker Zentrum zur Erforschung des Demografischen Wandels (RZ), the Vienna Institute of Demography (VID), the Wittgenstein Centre for Demography and Global Human Capital and the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB). The newsletter is released four times a year and is available electronically and as a printed version and is free of charge.
