Jisu Kim was awarded the first prize for her flash talk presentation at the conference “New data for the new challenges of population and society” that was organized by the Department of Statistical Science at the University of Padova.

Jisu Kim, Research Scientist at the Laboratory of Digital and Computational Demography presented her work entitled Home and Destination attachment: study of cultural integration on Twitter which is co-authored by Alina Sîrbu, Giulio Rossetti, Fosca Giannotti and Hillel Rapoport at the conference organized by the University of Padova.

“Our work provides a novel method to compute what we call, Home and Destination attachments”, says Jisu Kim. These two indexes are measured based on the country-specific hashtags from Twitter that are used by natives. Once the country-specific hashtags are used by immigrants, this provides an indication of how well the immigrants are culturally integrated in their host countries and how much they are still in touch with their home countries.

Four prizes were awarded for flash talk presentations within the program of the excellence project Methods and models for complex data at the conference based on these four categories:

  • Clarity of the presentation
  • Originality of the topic
  • Originality of the methodology
  • Adherence to the theme of the excellence project “Methods and models for complex data”
