In their recent paper published in the “European Journal of Epidemiology” MPIDR Researchers Domantas Jasilionis and Alyson van Raalte and Pavel Grigoriev and Sebastian Klüsener from the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB) have a closer look on the development of life expectancy in Germany. Bettina Hünteler is a new Research Scientist at the Research Group: Kinship Inequalities

Bettina Hünteler has submitted her doctoral thesis in social sciences at the University of Cologne and is particularly interested in intergenerational relationships, the life course and social inequality. At the MPIDR, she plans to spend the next three years researching the interconnectedness between family networks and various indicators of social inequality. In her free time, she enjoys climbing and traveling. more

US Health: Women over 50 Spend More Time Without a Partner and Cognitively Impaired than Men

A team of researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) in Rostock, Germany and the University of St Andrews in Scotland estimates how long a 50-year old person in the US is going to live without a partner and/or be cognitively impaired. In their paper recently published in “Population Studies” the researchers find disparities of up to 10 years both between men and women and ethnic groups. more

US Mortality: New Measure Reveals Large Mortality Inequality

Researchers at the MPIDR and University of Wisconsin-Madison developed a new measure called GAP to assess contemporary mortality inequality in the US across racial-ethnic groups. They find that current estimates based on standard metrics such as life expectancy underestimate racial-ethnic disparities in mortality. more
